Traditional Thai Yoga Massage
Thai massage looks like a cross between acupressure, yoga, and Zen shiatsu. The massage consists of a technique that uses slow, rhythmic compressions and stretches along the body’s energy lines, called Sen in Thai. This is a very intense technique often used as to replace or supplement traditional physical therapies.

  • Increases flexibility and range of movement.
  • Relieves fatigue, swollen limbs, painful joints, and headaches.
  • Eliminates muscle pain and muscle spasms
  • Improves postural alignment
  • Calms the nervous system and promotes a deep sense of relaxation.
  • Increases energy levels.
  • Stimulates blood circulation & stimulates internal organs.

A Thai massage is typically performed on a floor mat enabling practitioners the ability to use their body weight and to incorporate the many movements that would not be possible on a massage table. The client wears comfortable, loose cloths (provided if needed). A Thai massage usually lasts one to two hours, but may be three hours or more if needed.

Thai massage uses no oils or lotions, and the recipient remains clothed during a treatment. There is constant body contact between the practitioner and client, but rather than rubbing on muscles, the body is compressed, pulled, stretched and rocked in order to clear energy blockages and relieve tension. The practitioner uses thumbs, palms, forearms, elbows, knees and feet. In this process, joints are opened, muscles and tendons are stretched, internal organs are toned, and energy is balanced. The overall effect is one of deep relaxation, rejuvenation, and physical and mental well being.

Nuad Boran (known in various forms as Thai massage, Thai Yoga Massage, and other terms) began to evolve in Thailand over 2,000 years ago. Based on healing principles similar to those utilized in other non-western healing therapies, the Thai system focuses on circulation of vital energy in major pathways called sen. The major energy lines are manipulated, and important pressure points along these pathways are stimulated to help break down blockages, stimulate energy flow and restore balance and harmony.

Identifying features of traditional Thai massage are integrated yoga postures which are performed on the recipient. Through assisted yoga, the body is stretched in ways that are difficult to attain through individual exercise and yoga practice. The result of a full-body Thai treatment is often an exciting and powerful mind/body healing experience, bringing the recipient to heightened states of physical and spiritual well-being.

Before the massage you’ll be asked to remove clothing to your level of comfort. The therapist will leave the room while you undress. Take off only as much as you are comfortable removing. Lie on the massage table, underneath the provided sheet or towel, which will cover your body except for the part being massaged.

Massage therapists often use oil or lotion, which reduces drag on the skin during massage. If you’re allergic to oils or lotions, tell your massage therapist beforehand.

Depending on your needs, the massage therapist will massage either the full body (except private areas) or only specific areas that need attention, such as especially tight muscles.

Remember to breathe normally.
